Challenges
This was our first web configurator project, which came with its own set of challenges, particularly around UI/UX design. I had to ensure the interface was intuitive enough for the target user base to easily navigate the configurable options, while also keeping the experience smooth, engaging and aligned with the client's brand. Additionally, it needed to be fully responsive, working seamlessly across both desktop and mobile devices.
The 3D model included a magnitude of individual parts, which was too heavy for a web environment. While I utilized Pixyz Studio to automate a portion of the cleanup, there was still a fair amount of manual work needed to optimize everything. I also coordinated with the client to request missing parts that weren’t initially included in the model.
Even though I had experience with BabylonJS and Storyblok from a previous virtual showroom project, integrating configurable parts presented a new challenge. To solve this, I consolidated all the animations into one continuous timeline and grouped them for each interaction. I created a Google Spreadsheet to manage and communicate the complexity of the animation logic between myself and our programmer.
Some aspects, like lighting and material quality, didn’t receive as much attention as I would have liked due to budget and time constraints. However, the project delivered a fully functional solution that aligned with the client’s vision and worked well for their launch. After the successful launch, I implemented the Lokotrack® LT350C into the web configurator, using the same workflow.
